Voice over recording issues 2

After recording our new sound clips we are now attempting to involve them into our editing process. We  are experiencing a few difficulties but hope these will be resolved soon.

Voice Over Issues

After reviewing and listening to the voice over recordings we realised that the sound quality was equally as bad as when we initially recorded. We've booked ourselves in to record in the recording studio at school. We hope this will finally resolve this issue that has proven to be our biggest challenge yet.

Availability of Actors

Throughout the recording process at times it's proven to be very stressful when organising filming times where everybody can attend. I have communicated with my actors through facebook and imessenger as these were the two different means of communication our actors had.

Here's an example of when one of our Actresses was unable to attend a shooting day:

Evidence of communication:

We will commence the filming on the following days this week.

Half Term Break

Just before half term we got a lot done!
  • We recorded the voice overs for our trailers and will begin to impliment ADR by editing our trailer once we get back to school.
  • We recorded new footage that needs to be edited and uploaded to the mac.
  • We recorded the process of filming the voice clips for evidence to upload to our blogs.
Unfortunately we only have access to the software we need in order to continue the editing of our production within school so we will resume this when we return and in the mean time record more footage.

Ken Burns Editing Tool

The Ken Burns effect is a popular name for a type of panning and zooming effect used in video production.
Whilst exploring the different editing tools within iMedia we began to use this and liked the simplicity of it and the positive effect it had on our production. It allowed relevant elements to be emphasised without it being too opressive.

Juxtaposing Colour

Colour is a very important element within film as it helps to emphasise important points in a subtle way. In our trailer we decided to film the scenes of Martin and Anna in a warm lighting, with colours such as orange, red and brown being evident. This helped depict the happy family environment that we wished to be evident.

We then juxtaposed this warm and idyllic feel with a cold feel when Isabella was being filmed. The stark contrast in these two clips juxtaposed next to each other is very successful in emitting the evident contrast in feelings and personas.

Technical Issues

We have begun the editing process of our trailer, due to the video camera's in which we are using aren't very good quality we have ran into some sound issues. We found the sound and speech of actors was very poor, quiet and low in quality. Purchasing better quality software is not an option for us, I'm afraid, as there is a very low/ hardly any media budget for our school. We are trying to work with the equipment we have and produce the best product we possibly can.

We have opted to use a technique called ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) in the editing process to allow a crisp and better quality of sound. We are using a Sennheiser headset with attached mic to record sound clips onto imovie and edit them into the appropriate clip. This is the first time we have ever attempted this but we're hopeful that it will give us a better end product.

As our actress was unavailable to attend our editing session, I am going to do the voice over for her instead. This will be more convenient as i will be at every editing session. There isn't a lot of dialogue in our Film Trailer so it won't be too much of a hindrance.

Jump cut editing

A jump cut is a transition between two shots which appears to "jump" due to the way the shots are framed in relation to each other. It breaks continuity and draws attention to the constructucted nature of the film and makes viewers question the reasons behind this.

Jump shots add tension and impact when use correctly.

We chose to start out trailer with jump shot editing as we didn't want out trailer to follow the story continuously as a trailer is just a teaser of the main events in a film. A jump shot allows things to become ambiguous and allows readers to consider many different possibilities. We recorded a short amount of film and edited it also.
